Bassmasterクラシック出場を目指し、米国バストーナメントを戦うKen-Dの奮戦記です。。。

32年ぶりにNationアングラーがクラシックを制覇した、ちょうどその3月15日・・・
テネシーB.A.S.S.Nationに所属する寺島信幸さんが、58年の早過ぎる生涯を閉じられました。
ティムズ・フォードレイクのボートランプでの事故だったとの事で、未だ信じられない思いです。

On March 15—the same day a Nation angler won the Classic for the first time in 32 years—Nobuyuki Terajima passed away at 58.
He was lost in a tragic accident at Tims Ford Lake. Still in disbelief. Rest in peace.

寺島さんは日本のトップアングラーとして活躍し、バスオブジャパンで優勝・AOY多数。
90年代に単身渡米し、スライダーワームのチャーリー・ブリューワー宅に寄せてもらっていたそうです。
その後はナッシュビルに居を構えてNation参戦を続けてきた、アメリカ挑戦のまさに先駆者でした。

A top Japanese angler with many Japan B.A.S.S. Nation titles/AOYs.
Terajima moved to the US in the 90s, staying with Charlie Brewer (Slider Worms).
A true pioneer who called Nashville home and competed in the Nation for decades.

その才能はあの宮崎友輔選手をして”天才”と言わしめ、「プロになっていれば相当の選手になったはず」との事。
アメリカのNationでも活躍し、テネシー代表としてチャンピオンシップにも2回出場(確か日米通算5回)しました。
私も昨秋のラクロス戦でご一緒し、ノープラクティスの寺島さんにコテンパンにやられたものです。

Even Yusuke Miyazaki called him a “genius” who would’ve been a pro star.
He qualified for the Nation Championship 5 times in total (between Japan and the US).
Last fall at La Crosse, he beat me without even practicing. A pure natural talent.

亡くなられた日もちょうど州予選の練習中だったそうで、クラシック出場を目標に出場を重ねてきた寺島さん。
私も同じ大会に出るので、ちょうどAirBnbの宿をシェアする話をしたばかりでした。
誰も出るはずのない電話に掛けてみたら、まだ呼び出し音が鳴り・・・今も寺島さんの声が聞こえて来そうな気がしています。

He passed away while practicing for the State tournament.
We had just talked about sharing an Airbnb for Qualifier.
I called his phone, knowing no one would answer… the ringing tone still plays, and I feel like I can almost hear his voice.

また寺島さんは渡米後も、バスオブジャパンの米国トーナメント参戦をサポートし続けて来られました。
特に近年は試合に自身のボートをお貸し下さったり、通訳としても選手を支援。
文字通り寺島さん無しにアメリカ挑戦はあり得なかった、まさに縁の下の力持ちだったと思います。

Also, he was a pillar for Japanese anglers in the US.
He supported Japan Nation by lending his boat and translating for competitors.
He was the unsung hero—without him, many of our dreams in America wouldn’t have been possible.

同じテネシーのNationアングラーとして、ここ数年私も親しくさせて頂きました。
拙宅にお泊り頂き、チカマウガでバズベイト談議に花を咲かせた秋が昨日の事のように思い出されます。
未だ夢の途中にあった寺島さんが、どうか天国でクラシックに出られるようお祈りしています。

As a fellow Tennessee Nation angler, we became close these last few years.
I still remember that fall when he stayed at my house—we spent the whole time talking buzzbaits on Chickamauga.
It feels like yesterday. I pray he’s finally fishing the Classic in heaven.
