ミシシッピ川の上流、水運で栄えた内陸の港町ラ・クロス。
そのスペル(La Crosse)から推察されるように、フランス系移民が築き上げた街です。

これはミシシッピ川から五大湖、果てはセントローレンス川を抜けて大西洋に抜ける壮大な水運ルートをかつてフランスが抑えていたからだそう。
確かに河口部のルイジアナ州バトンルージュから、カナダのケベック州に至るまで、ラテン系な響きの名前の街が並んでいます。

歴史のロマンが可愛らしい水辺の街並みに佇むラ・クロス。
北の街の短い春が輝く5月、きっとまたこの地に帰ってきたいと思わせられました。

It seems La Crosse is an inland port town on the upper Mississippi River that prospered through water transportation.
As one might guess from its spelling (La Crosse), the town was founded by French immigrants.
I heard this is because France once controlled the magnificent water transportation route from the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes and eventually to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence River.
Indeed, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the mouth of the Mississippi river, to Quebec, Canada, there are towns with Latin-sounding names.
La Crosse is a waterfront town with a lovely sense of historical romance.
May, when the short spring in the northern city shines brightly, surely made me want to return to this place again.
