Do you check the “center balance” of your front treble hook?
When the hook eye direction of the plug and the hook match (vertical & vertical, or horizontal & horizontal), the hook sits symmetrically.
Based on two personal experiences, I believe this is key to a better hook-up ratio.
Experience 1:
While catching dozens of fish a day in fall, I realized that upsizing the lipless crankbait’s hooks from #6 to #4 reduced missed strikes.
Downsizing to #8 dropped hook-up rate drastically.
Conclusion 1: Larger hooks hook fish better.
Experience 2:
I kept getting short bites with a round-body crankbait in early spring on Lake Biwa.
Switching to a flat-side crankbait with the same hook size suddenly got them hooked.
Conclusion 2: The further the hook points are from the body, the better the hookup rate.
Bottom line: Setting your hooks to a center balance should boost your hookup rate.
If the hook is asymmetrical, one hook point sits closer to the center line—meaning it gets tucked behind the lure body, making it much harder to hook fish.
That’s why I’ve long used Gamakatsu Treble EWG for lures with horizontal hook hangers.
The design is getting pretty dated, and I’d love an updated version, but with so few alternatives on the market, it’s still my main choice.
