The Pro XS250 (4st) is fast, light, runs on regular gas, and gets great fuel economy.
The big drawback is that replacement parts are so expensive—the lower unit assembly alone costs around $11,000!
I seriously considered replacing it with a brand-new one, but I ultimately had second thoughts.
Also, as I’ve shared many times before, electronic components like the alternator and trim sometimes break.
The engine block itself is tough, so replacing those small components isn’t a problem on its own.
However, when tournament dates are involved, there’s simply no time to fix them, meaning even a minor failure can result in a breakdown.

Pros trade in for brand-new boats every year specifically to prevent these kinds of on-the-water issues during tournaments.
So I even considered repowering with a whole new engine, but that would run about $26,000.
I spent a whole day and night agonizing over whether it makes sense to put that much money into a hull I’ve already been running for six years.

With its V8 sound, I absolutely love this American outboard as a piece of machinery.
If I were buying just for fun, this would definitely be the choice.
But considering the risk of breakdown during competition, I’ve been thinking a Yamaha or even a Suzuki —even if it’s a bit slower—might be a viable option.
