同じ北部スモールとは言っても、セントローレンスの豚バスとは体型が大違い。
別種では？と思うほどですが、大きく言えば同じ水系で、遺伝的な差は無いはず。
この違いを生んだのは”餌”、つまりシャンプレインには大型タンカーが来ないので、ゴビーが入っていないのです。

The body shape of smallmouth bass in Lake Champlain and the St.Lawrence River are totally different!
They should be genetically identical, so the bait, gobies, must make this big difference.
(There are not many gobies in Champlain because no big ships come in)

なのでメインベイトは、写真のパーチやエールワイフ(ニシンみたいなやつ)になるのですが・・・
居る場所が全然違って、岩場とかでなく何もない超・沖の中層をたくさん泳ぎ回っていました。
釣り方もボトムへの反応が悪く、やはりスイミング系が圧倒的に効いた印象です。

So the main bait in Champlain seems to be perch and alewife.
That puts the bass out far offshore with no cover, not around the rocky humps, etc.
And they tend not to eat off the bottom, but the rigs swimming in midwater worked. 

日本でも、例えばワカサギが入るとバスが沖を泳ぎ始める傾向が強いですよね。
バスはカバーフィッシュなどと言われますが、”この魚はこういう習性だから”と決めつけるのは危険。
ルアーどうこうよりもまずベイトを知ること、湖の自然環境を考えることが先だと思います。

This kind of change caused by their bait often happens in Japan as well.
It’s not good to assume that the fish must have a certain habit.
Considering their environment, like their bait, is the most important thing over what lure to throw.
